"Hey, it's a kind of magic..." As a child, Ryan Miller dreamed of one day exploring the cosmos as a member of Starfleet. He enrolled in the academy as soon as he was old enough, working hard and finishing at the top of his class. His rise through the ranks was meteoric, as he used his skills and intelligence wisely, taking advantage of every opportunity that came his way. He served on many different starships before finally being handed the reins to his own ship, the USS Joan of Arc, a small, Constellation class vessel. After serving aboard the Joan of Arc for only three years, his name appeared on the short list of candidates to pilot Starfleet's new flagship, a new 'Galaxy' class starship called the Enterprise (NCC-1701 D). He lobbied to every connection he had at Starfleet command for the promotion, but ultimately, the Enterprise was given to Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Stargazer. He said of the decision, "I know Picard. He is a fine captain and a good man. I wish him well." Although, he had meant what he'd said, he was crushed, seeing his being passed over as a defeat and took on a much looser style of leadership. If this was to be the end of his rise, he was determined to enjoy the plateau.
